What It's Like

San Juan Del Sur is a popular beach town on Nicaragua's Pacific Coast, offering up party-hearty bars, casual open-air restaurants serving tasty seafood, and a crescent-shaped beach. It's the hub of the Rivas province of Nicaragua, which is known for its beautiful beaches and smattering of luxury resorts. The beach in San Juan Del Sur isn't the area's best (expect vendors and stray dogs), but it's pretty enough -- especially at sunset -- and the town is definitely one of the best bets for travelers in search of nightlife. (Drunken karaoke, anyone?) The colossal Christ of Mercy statue towering over the town from a hillside above makes for an interesting contrast to the town's rowdy late-night behavior. (The statue itself is worth a visit for its panoramic views of the town and cove.)

Where To Stay

Those who want to be in stumbling distance of the town's bars would do well to stay as close to town as possible. Those more interested in views and an upscale atmosphere may consider staying up the hill a bit at a resort like Pelican Eyes.
